I will kill 3 popular lies they told you about copywriting. If you believe any of them, that is why you are not making money yet.

Lie 1: You need to be good at English to be a good copywriter.

Truth: Good copywriters write simple on purpose.

The best copy in Nigeria is not, In accordance with our commitment to excellence.

It is, This shoe will not pain your leg in the market again.

Harvard writers are broke. Market women are rich. Market women know copywriting.

Your customer is not an English teacher. He is a tired man scrolling at 11pm with 20 percent battery.

He does not want grammar. He wants relief.

Big grammar kills sales. Simple gist makes sales.

Lie 2: Long copy does not sell in this TikTok generation.

Truth: People do not hate reading long copy. People hate reading boring copy.

Ask yourself. Why can someone read 400 WhatsApp messages about a cheating boyfriend, but cannot read your 150 word sales page?

Because gist is interesting. Your copy is boring.

A woman will read a 2000 word thread about Regina Daniels marriage at 2am. She will not read your 3 lines about your skincare product.

The problem is not length. The problem is you.

If it is interesting, they will read. If it is about their money or pain, they will read twice.

Lie 3: You need a laptop and website to start.

Truth: This is the biggest scam gurus use to delay you.

They say build portfolio website, buy MacBook, learn Word.

I started with Tecno phone and WhatsApp status.

Your phone has Google Docs for writing, ChatGPT for research, voice recorder for explanation, WhatsApp for finding clients.

All you need to close a 50k client is one good Google Doc and proof that you can write.

I have closed a 300 dollar client from my phone inside keke in Port Harcourt. No laptop.

Laptop does not make you a copywriter. Sales make you a copywriter.

So what is the real belief you should have?

Copywriting is not writing.

Copywriting is listening.

The best copywriters are not the best writers. They are the best listeners. They listen to what customers complain about in comment section, then they repeat it back on the sales page.

You do not invent words. You collect them from customers mouth.

Which lie have you been believing?
